BRIEF: Illini playmakers using off week to heal

Oct. 13--Illinois' off week is coming when the team could use a little extra time to heal.

Without a game this week, Illinois will have more time to get top playmakers rested and ready for the Oct. 24 game against Wisconsin.

Wide receiver Geronimo Allison was being evaluated with concussion tests, interim coach Bill Cubit said Tuesday on the Big Ten coaches teleconference. Running back Josh Ferguson's return from a shoulder injury, which kept him sidelined most of the Nebraska game and all of the Iowa game, will be determined next week, Cubit said.

Allison took a crushing hit near the end of Illinois' 29-20 loss at Iowa on Saturday and did not return to the game. Replays showed an Iowa player colliding with Allison's helmet.

Cubit said Allison passed concussion tests but he will not participate much during practices this week.

"I really can't tell you the extent of it, being out of town (recruiting)," Cubit said. "He does feel a whole lot better. They went through the process, the normal procedures and all the tests."

Allison leads the Big Ten among receivers with 100.2 yards per game. He's caught three touchdown passes for the Illini (4-2, 1-1) this season.
