June 16--Illinois guard Mike LaTulip, a former walk-on who earned a scholarship, will redshirt the upcoming basketball season and then plans to transfer to exhaust his final year of eligibility as a graduate student.
He is scheduled to graduate this spring.
LaTulip, an Arlington Heights native, was granted a scholarship mid-year last season when the Illini did not pick up a transfer. He played in 16 games with a 1.6 points per game average.
The Illini released a statement Monday from head coach John Groce, praising LaTulip for his work ethic in Champaign.
"Mike and I have had numerous discussions about this and I fully support his decision," Groce said. "He has been a valuable member of our program since joining us at the beginning of our tenure three years ago. In addition to being a tremendous shooter, Mike is an extremely intelligent, hard worker who helps set the tone for our team with his competitiveness each and every day."
