March 06--SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Giants outfielder Hunter Pence suffered a nondisplaced fracture in his left forearm and will miss 6-8 weeks, the team announced.
Pence was hit by a pitch by Cubs' pitcher Corey Black.
"We believe it's broken," manager Bruce Bochy said after the game.
Black hit Pence in the sixth inning of the Giants 8-6 win, and left the game. Bochy went to talk to Pence afterwards.
"You know Hunter," Bochy said. "He's always upbeat and optimistic. Said he tried to move out of the way. (The pitch) kind of ran in and got him there. If it is broken, the silver lining is it's early in the spring and at least we have a month to start the healing process...
"You hate to see it, but unfortunately these things do happen. Those guys work so hard all winter. You hate to see it in the second game out there. But we're still hoping for the best news, hoping maybe we're wrong."
Unfortunately, they were right, and the Giants will miss one of their best offensive players for the start of the season.
