Prosecutors: Man charged in fatal crash was at almost twice legal alcohol limit

Jan. 20--A Humboldt Park man has been charged after police say he was drunk and behind the wheel during a fatal hit-and-run accident that killed two men over the weekend.

Jose Estrada, 24, was charged with two felony counts of aggravated DUI resulting in death, as well as misdemeanor driving under the influence charges, according to a Chicago Police Department statement. Estrada, who prosecutors said had a blood-alcohol content of 0.157 percent after the crash, was ordered held in lieu of $500,000 bail in a hearing Monday.

Estrada, of the 1200 block of North Kedzie Avenue, was also cited with failure to reduce speed.

Police said Estrada was driving a 2002 Buick about 10:10 p.m. Saturday in the 4300 block of West North Avenue in the Hermosa neighborhood on the Northwest Side when he struck two people who were walking across the street.

After striking the two men, Estrada allegedly sped away from the scene and crashed into three parked vehicles three blocks away at North and Kedvale avenues, police said. One of the men hit was taken to Norwegian American Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said. The other man died at the scene.

The two were later identified as Raman Cruz, 36, and Pablo Esquivel-Vega, believed to be in his 50s, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Estrada vomited in the back of a police car, prosecutors said.
