BRIEF: Hoover wrestling's Geraldy Martinez looks to survive first day of Masters Meet

Feb. 26--On one hand, Hoover High senior wrestler Geraldy Martinez has already turned in his fair share of history.

By finishing fourth at 145 pounds at last week's CIF Southern Section Coastal Division Wrestling Championships at Corona Santiago High, Martinez became his school's third consecutive wrestler to advance to the CIF Southern Section Masters Meet.

Now Martinez will need a top-nine finish in his weight class at this weekend's Masters Meet at Ontario's Citizen Business Bank Arena to become his school's third-ever placer at state.

"It's really exciting," Martinez said. "This has been a tough year, but I feel like it's all worth it now. It's great to make it to Masters."

The two-day tournament begins Friday at 10 a.m. and a pair of losses though the first five rounds will mean elimination.

Martinez is guaranteed at least three rounds on Friday, barring two straight losses to start, and needs to pick up at least two wins to advance to Saturday's final day of action.

Depending on whether his record is unblemished or not, Martinez would then begin at either 10 a.m. or 11 a.m. in the consolation bracket or championship bracket on Saturday, should he advance past Friday's opening day of action.
