Detectives investigate fatal stabbing at Long Beach Metro station

April 15--Los Angeles County sheriff's homicide detectives are investigating the fatal stabbing of a man on a Metro Blue Line platform in Long Beach early Friday morning.

Transit Policing Division deputies were patrolling the Wardlow Blue Line station platform, in the 3400 block of North Pacific Place, when they encountered two men who appeared to have been involved in a fight around 2:14 a.m., police said.

One of the men was lying on the ground, and the other fled toward West Wardlow Road. Deputies requested assistance, and Long Beach Police Department units responded. The man on the ground was declared dead at the scene.

Police located the man who ran away and used several less lethal weapons before taking the man into custody about a half-mile from the crime scene. He was taken to a local hospital, where he is being treated for self-inflicted knife wounds, authorities said.

He is listed in critical condition. The motive for the stabbing is unknown, authorities said.

Metro tweeted that the Wardlow Station was closed early Friday because of police activity, and a Metro spokeswoman said there was temporarily no rail service between Willow Station and Del Amo Station. Buses are replacing trains between the stations, she said.

Partial rail operation service was restored at 5:40 a.m., authorities said.
