BRIEF: Homer Glen's Becca Mann misses Olympic open water spot

July 28--Becca Mann's hopes of making the 2016 U.S. Olympic team now rest in the pool.

The swimmer from Homer Glen finished fast in Tuesday's 10-kilometer race at the World Championships in Kazan, Russia, but still fell a disappointing 15 seconds short of the top 10 finish she needed to earn a spot in Rio.

Mann, 17, a high school senior who trains in Baltimore, wound up 14th. She finished eighth in the event at the 2013 worlds and has won the last two U.S. titles in the race.

Haley Anderson of Granite Bay, Calif., will be the lone U.S. woman in the open water race at Rio. She finished ninth in Tuesday's race.

"Hard day for me, but really excited for @SwimHaley!!!" Mann tweeted.

Mann also made the U.S. world team in the pool, where she is to swim the 800-meter freestyle beginning with Aug. 7 preliminaries.

She will need a top-two finish in an event at next year's U.S. Olympic Trials to make the Olympic team. At last year's pool nationals, Mann was third in the 800 free, fourth in the 400 individual medley and fifth in the 400 free.

Monday, Northwestern senior Jordan Wilimovsky won the open water world title to become the first U.S. swimmer on the 2016 Olympic team.
