Homeless man on parole charged in six burglaries

April 06--A homeless man on parole has been charged in connection with six North and Northwest Side burglaries, including a January restaurant burglary in the Old Town Triangle neighborhood, according to police.

Jason Caldwell, 38, was arrested Sunday night on charges related to a burglary overnight Jan. 29 in the 300 block of West North Avenue, Chicago police said in a news release. Police records show a restaurant was burglarized, but police would not disclose what was taken.

After obtaining a warrant, police arrested Caldwell, 38, Sunday night in the 3000 block of South Homan Avenue. He was ordered held in lieu of $100,000 bail in a hearing on felony burglary charges Tuesday afternoon before Cook County Judge Maria Kuriakos-Ciesil, according to the Cook County state's attorney's office.

In addition to the North Avenue burglary, Caldwell was charged with five other burglaries, police said Wednesday:

--About 2 a.m. Jan. 22, in the 1400 block of North Dayton Street

--About 2:06 a.m. Jan. 28 in the 800 block of West Eastman Street

--About 5 a.m. Feb. 4, in the 1300 block of West Fullerton Avenue

--About 3:44 a.m. March 18, in the 5300 block of North Milwaukee Avenue

--Between 11 p.m. March 17 and 6 a.m. March 18 in the 5500 block of North Milwaukee

Caldwell, who police and court records show uses the Pacific Garden Mission as his home address, was released from state prison in January after serving a little less than six years of a six-year prison sentence in a 2010 burglary, according to state records. In that incident, Caldwell was found guilty in a bench trial of the May 11, 2010, burglary of a small store in the 1700 block of South Ashland Avenue, according to court and police records.
