BRIEF: 'Home Alone' to return to theaters for 25th anniversary

Sept. 29--Clap your hands to your face and scream. "Home Alone" is coming back to theaters in November to celebrate the film's 25th anniversary.

The movie, about the misadventures 8-year-old Kevin McCallister (played by Macaulay Culkin) gets into when he's mistakenly left home alone, will be in theaters Nov. 8 and Nov. 11. More than a dozen Chicago-area theaters are scheduled to show the film.

The movie, written by longtime Northbrook resident John Hughes and set in Winnetka, was released in the United States on Nov. 16, 1990. "Home Alone" grossed more than $476 million worldwide, according to box office tracker Box Office Mojo, and spawned a few sequels.

Former Tribune movie critic Dave Kehr gave the film three stars in his November 1990 review, writing, "It's a typically clever Hughes premise, and for much of the movie, director (Chris) Columbus develops it with wit and warmth."

The film was shot in the Chicago area. The Winnetka gazebo featured in the film was torn down earlier this month.
