Oct. 29--Hockey legend Gordie Howe remains in guarded condition after suffering a "significant" stroke on Sunday, but the 86-year-old Hall of Famer is showing some signs of improvement, his son, Hall of Fame defenseman Mark Howe, said Wednesday in a statement in a post on the Detroit Red Wings' website.
Gordie Howe, a four-time Stanley Cup champion, six-time NHL scoring leader and six-time MVP, is revered throughout the hockey world for the toughness and skill he showed through 26 seasons in the NHL and six in the World Hockey Assn.
He was at the home of his daughter Cathy in Lubbock, Texas, when he suffered the stroke. He had undergone spinal surgery over the summer and seemed to be doing well.
According to the family statement, Howe's "spirits are good and his competitive attitude remains strong." Red Wings players also shared their memories of him online.
