BRIEF: Hobart man a fugitive after murder charge in Portage man's disappearance

Nov. 18--An anonymous tip Friday night led to the discovery of a dismembered body in the trunk of a car owned by David Krawczenia, and police believe the body is the missing 48-year-old Portage, Ind., man.

Thomas Smith, 63, of the 4100 block of Swift Street in Hobart, Ind., was charged Monday with murder in Krawczenia's death. Smith is not in custody, police said. U.S. Marshals Service agents have been searching for him.

Smith, who operated a garage at 2600 Colorado St. in Gary, where Krawczenia owned his All About Auto business, apparently owed Krawczenia a considerable sum of money and the two were supposed to meet Nov. 1 to settle the debt, police said.
