BRIEF: Hit-and-run driver slams into poles; 1,140 in Sun Valley without power

Dec. 19--Crews are working to restore electricity to more than 1,000 customers after a driver struck several power poles and fled early Friday.

Police are continuing to look for the driver who crashed into the power poles and a fire hydrant about 1 a.m. on Lankershim Boulevard between Roscoe Boulevard and Saticoy Street, the Los Angeles Police Department said.

The crash initially left more than 3,200 customers without power after water from the hydrant shot into the air and drenched the toppled lines, KTLA-TV Channel 5 reported.

At least 1,140 customers will likely remain without power until noon, said Terry Schneider, spokeswoman of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.

Crews, she said, were working as quickly and as safely as possible to restore power to customers.
