Dec. 10--Motorists who use two Illinois tollways will get to put the pedal down a little farther next year -- legally, at least.
Tollway officials Wednesday recommended raising the speed limit to 70 mph from 65 mph on the Veterans Memorial Tollway (Interstate 355) from I-55 to I-80, and on the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90) from Elgin to Rockford.
The new speed limits will be effective sometime this summer, pending expected approval from officials in Springfield.
Stretches of tollway in distant areas beyond Rockford, from DeKalb to Dixon, and north of Waukegan are already 70 mph. The rest of the tollway system is posted from 55 to 65.
