BRIEF: High school runners disqualified for helping fallen opponent

Nov. 04--It seems that some rules need to be broken.

At a girls' high school cross-country meet in Minnesota last weekend, two runners saw an opponent fall on the final stretch, so they stopped to pick her up.

An official warned them not to do it, but they helped her some 50 meters to the finish line anyway.

This act of sportsmanship got junior Kailee Kiminski and senior Tierney Winter disqualified for breaking a league rule that prohibits aiding another runner. The girl they helped, a freshman named Jessica Christoffer, was also disqualified.

None of the girls knew each other.

"If I was in her situation, I'd want somebody to help me too," Winter told the Waseca County News.
