BRIEF: Hell in a Handbag announces 2016 season

Feb. 15--Hell in a Handbag productions, Chicago's campiest theater company, announced its 2016 season on Monday.

The season kicks off with "The Divine Sister," (June 4 -- July 10) Charles Busch's homage to nun movies. Shade Murray will direct and David Cerda will star as a Mother Superior on a mission. The production is slated to run at an actual place of worship: Ebenezer Lutheran Church.

"Bette, Live at the Continental Baths" (Aug. 12 -- Sept. 10) returns to Stage 773 with its recreation of Bette Middler's legendary New York concert. Caitlin Jackson will star, with direction by Christopher Pazdernik.

Just in time for Halloween, Cerda's parody "Scooby, Don't!" (Sept. 29 -- Nov. 4) takes on Scaggy, Fredd, Velva, Daffy and their talking detective dog on a mission to save Cher, as played by Ed Jones. Derek Van Barham will direct the production at Mary's Attic.

Closing out the season is "The RIP Nelson Holiday Spectacular," (Nov. 20 -- Dec. 30) also at Mary's Attic. Ed Jones will star as the has-been '80s television star in this premiere written by Cerda and directed by Steve Love.
