BRIEF: Helicopter lands on 5 Freeway, airlifts child after Castaic crash

Dec. 01--The 5 Freeway in Castaic was shut down in both directions Monday morning so a helicopter could land and airlift a critically injured 4-year-old to a trauma center.

The child was hurt in a three-car crash in the southbound lanes of the 5 at Hasley Canyon Road about 5 a.m., the California Highway Patrol said.

The crash left seven people injured, two critically, including the child, according to officials with the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The gender of the child was not immediately available.

The incident closed all southbound lanes of the freeway until about 7 a.m. when officers reopened two lanes. Northbound traffic was reopened before 6 a.m.

The child was airlifted to a hospital that specializes in treating young trauma patients, officials said.
