Thunderstorm watch for south suburbs, storms possible throughout area

June 07--The National Weather Service has declared a thunderstorm watch for Will, Peoria, Kankakee and other counties in north-central Illinois, mostly south of Interstate 80.

The watch lasts until 8 p.m. for more than 30 counties in Illinois, as far south as Coles County, as well as Lake, Porter and three other counties in northwest Indiana.

It's expected to be the second of two storm fronts to move through the Chicago area Sunday.

The morning system, which has largely moved out of the area, included heavy rain. Local totals included 1.12 inches in southwest suburban Plainfield, 1.45 inches in south suburban Park Forest, and 1.54 inches in south suburban Chicago Heights, according to the National Weather Service. It spread across northern Illinois and has moved east into Michigan and northern Indiana.

But the agency says the storm that will follow later Sunday has a greater chance of producing severe weather, notably strong winds and heavy rain, perhaps up to 2 inches in an hour in some places, and possible flash flooding. The worst of that storm is expected to hit the southern parts of the area.

The line of storms will gradually shift south of Interstate 80 in the evening, the agency said, with the worst of the storms out of the area before midnight.

There is a chance of some rain Monday, according to ChicagoWeatherCenter.com, but it's expected to be a mostly sunny day. The next chance for rain is expected to be Wednesday or Thursday, with a chance of thunderstorms Wednesday through Saturday.
