BRIEF: Lanes reopen after hazardous spill shuts down SB I-55 at County Line Road

Nov. 19--A hazardous material spill from a semi-truck Tuesday afternoon shut down all southbound lanes of traffic on the Stevenson Expressway near County Line Road for more than four hours, said Illinois State Police.

Police were alerted about 3:40 p.m. to the scene of the spill on I-55 west of the Tri-State Tollway. Preliminary information indicated a 2000 KW Tractor with a 1999 Trim Trailer was leaking hazardous material onto the shoulder of the roadway near County Line Road, police said.

Southbound lanes were immediately shut down and remained closed until about 8 p.m., when the left shoulder and left lane reopened to traffic. About 10:40 p.m., all other lanes reopened to normal traffic, state police said.

The Tri-State Hazmat Unit, Fire and Rescue and a decontamination truck were on the scene. Northbound traffic on I-55 is not affected, police said.
