BRIEF: Harris Theater names first ever choreographer in residence

March 30--The Harris Theater for Music and Dance announced Wednesday that Brian Brooks will be the theater's first choreographer in residence.

Brooks, the recipient of a 2013 Guggenheim Fellowship, is a New York City-based choreographer at the helm of the Brian Brooks Moving Company, which will produce the American Dance Institute commission "Wilderness" at New York's The Kitchen in June. Brooks has also choreographed Julie Taymor's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" at Theatre for a New Audience and will return to the company to choreograph Trevor Nunn's upcoming production of "Pericles."

Included in Brooks' three-year Harris residency is $600,000 in funding to cover his salary, the cost of commissions and production support.

The three companies to receive the first commissions will be Hubbard Street Dance Chicago in the 2016-17 season, and the Miami City Ballet and Brian Brooks Moving Company in the 2017-18 season. Each piece will be performed at the Harris.

The Harris Theater is located at 205 E. Randolph Drive.
