BRIEF: 'Hamilton' writes its own history and breaks record with 16 Tony nominations

May 03--REPORTING FROM NEW YORK -- "Hamilton," Lin-Manuel Miranda's hip-hop musical about America's founding fathers wrote its own bit of Tony Award history Tuesday morning by picking up 16 nominations, breaking the record held by "Billy Elliot" and "The Producers."

"Hamilton," already something of a shoo-in to win best musical, will now aim for "The Producers'" record of 12 Tony wins when the ceremony takes place June 12 in New York.

Other big names called out Tuesday morning for Broadway's biggest awards show included "Waitress," "Shuffle Along," "School of Rock" and "Bright Star," which join "Hamilton" in the new musical category.

"The Color Purple," "Spring Awakening," "She Loves Me" and "Fiddler on the Roof" were nominated for musical revival.

For best play, front-runners "Eclipsed" and "The Humans" will share slots with "King Charles III" and "The Father," while a host of starry names -- Lupita Nyong'o ("Eclipsed"), Michelle Williams ("Blackbird") and Jessica Lange ("Long Day's Journey Into Night") -- fill out the actress in a play category.
