BRIEF: Grading Illinois' performance vs. Kent State

Sept. 07--Offense

A-. Quarterback Wes Lunt was superb, connecting on 11 of 19 passes for 162 yards and four touchdowns as Illinois routed Kent State 52-3 Saturday in interim coach Bill Cubit's debut. A few marks come off for dropped passes and penalties by the Illini.

Defense

A+. The unit accounted for three interceptions and kept the Golden Flashes without a touchdown. The oft-criticized run defense gave up only 59 yards on the ground.

Special teams

A. Taylor Zalewski connected on a 43-yard field goal. Rob Bain blocked a Kent State field-goal attempt.

Coaching

A+. Under strange and stressful circumstances (the head coach fired a week before kickoff, a lightning storm postponing the game a day), Cubit had the team loose and ready to play.
