May 25--Chicago police on Sunday issued additional information about a vehicle involved in a fatal hit-and-run and renewed their call for the public's help in finding the driver of the car that struck and killed a 5-year-old girl Saturday afternoon on the Southwest Side.
The dark-colored sedan was in the 5900 block of South Mozart Avenue in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood when it struck the girl around 3:15 p.m., according to a statement from the Chicago Police Department Office of News Affairs.
On Sunday, police updated the description of the vehicle, saying it was a two-door Honda Civic with a sunroof and spoiler; it had a dark finish that was either dull or a primer coat, police said in a news release. Police said they have been receiving calls about the accident and are hoping that a better description of the vehicle will bring them closer to solving the case.
The girl was identified as Maria Gonzalez, who lived on the same block where she was killed, according to the Cook County medical examiner's officer. She was pronounced dead at 3:51 p.m. at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to the medical examiner.
Neighbors tell WGN-TV that the girl was crossing the street back to her home after getting ice cream from an ice-cream vendor when she was hit.
The car was last seen traveling westbound on 60th Street from Mozart, according to authorities.
The vehicle may have a front-end car bra, sport muffler and a broken lamp, police said.
Anyone with information about the vehicle or its driver should contact police at 312-745-4521.
