Feb. 28--The driver of a Mercedes sedan is in custody after being involved in an accident that injured four people including two children Saturday morning in the East Garfiled Park neighborhood, Chicago police said Saturday.
The accident happened about 6:48 a.m. at the intersection of Lake Street and Hamlin Avenue, according to Chicago Fire Department Cmdr. Frank Velez.
A Mercedes C300 sedan struck an Oldsmobile Regal after the driver of the Mercedes failed to stop at a red light, according to police. The Oldsmobile spun out and collided with a Chevrolet Town and Country van. Two children were ejected from the Oldsmobile, according to the accident report.
The driver of the Mercedes, a 27-year-old man, is in custody, said Officer Thomas Sweeney, a police spokesman.
A 2-year-old girl and another child, a boy, were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, said police said. Police earlier said the girl had died but later revised the information to indicate that the child was in critical condition but was still alive.
Two adults were taken in critical condition to Stroger Hospital, said Velez and police. Two people refused treatment at the scene, he said.
One of the drivers, a 25-year-old woman, was taken to Stroger Hospital where her condition had stablized. A 53-year-old passenger, a woman, refused treatment.
The 38-year-old male driver of the Chevrolet also refused treatment, according to the report. The 27-year-old male driver of the Mercedes was taken to Stroger Hospital where his condition had stablized.
Charges against the driver of the Mercedes were pending, police said.
