BRIEF: Gina Rodriguez launches campaign to promote Hispanic actors

Jan. 26--Chicago actress Gina Rodriguez launched a social media campaign Monday to highlight the work of Hispanic actors and actresses.

The "Jane the Virgin" star kicked off #MovementMondays this week by featuring "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" actor Oscar Isaac, who hails from Guatemala. Rodriguez, 31, said the movement is in response to the recent debates about the lack of diversity of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which vote to determine Oscar nominees.

"With all this Oscar talk and lack of diversity I decided to start a movement and speak from the perspective of a Latina American who desires to see more Latinos on screen," Rodriguez, who grew up in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood on the Northwest Side, posted on Instagram.

"There are 55 million Latinos in this country and although we all come from various backgrounds our unity can make a movie explode at the box office or a TV show soar to the highest viewers possible."

"Jane the Virgin" airs 8 p.m. Mondays on The CW.
