BRIEF: Gillian Flynn TV project hits hurdle

Aug. 10--The cast of "Utopia," a British thriller adapted for HBO by Chicago author Gillian Flynn, was recently released from its contracts after an HBO dispute with director David Fincher, Deadline is reporting.

Fincher and HBO could not reach an agreement about the size of the budget, according to Deadline. Rumored cast included "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" lead Rooney Mara and "Will and Grace" star Eric McCormack. Deadline reports the cast may be rehired if a new director is found.

Flynn told BuzzFeed in October she was writing all of the episodes of the series, which is a remake of a British television series about conspiracy theories tied to a graphic novel.

A spokesman for HBO said the network did not plan to immediately issue a statement.

A Flynn publicist did not return a Tribune request for comment.

Flynn, who wrote psychological thriller "Gone Girl," studied at Northwestern University and lived for years in the Ukrainian Village before selling her greystone in the fall. A movie based on her book "Dark Places," starring Charlize Theron, was released Friday to some theaters.
