BRIEF: Germany chooses Hamburg to bid for 2024 Olympics

March 16--Hamburg has prevailed over Berlin as the city that German officials will put forth to bid for the 2024 Summer Games.

The national Olympic committee's eight-member board announced its decision on Monday and will present the recommendation to the general assembly for a vote this weekend, the Associated Press reported.

Hamburg was seen as the more popular choice but has less of an existing sports infrastructure than the capital city.

So far, Boston and Rome have officially announced their intention to bid. Other cities, including Paris, are expected to enter the race soon.

The International Olympic Committee has set a submission deadline for mid-September, with a final vote to select the host city in 2017.
