BRIEF: Gas station canopy collapses in Torrance; at least 1 person injured

Feb. 09--The canopy at a South Bay gas station collapsed Monday afternoon, trapping vehicles that were parked next to the pumps.

The awning at the Chevron station in the 3900 block of Artesia Boulevard fell about 3 p.m., Torrance fire Capt. Seve Deuel said.

Two workers were atop the canopy's roof, surveying cracks in the structure when it fell, Deuel said.

One worker suffered a minor injury, he said. The second worker was uninjured.

Two cars were under the awning when it fell, but no one on the ground was injured, Deuel said.

"We dodged a bullet there," he added.

The city's fire department cordoned off the area and the investigation into the incident will be conducted by the city's department of building and safety.
