BRIEF: Garbage truck fuel leak forces short evacuation of Batavia library

March 03--Batavia firefighters helped evacuate the lower level of the Batavia Public Library on Tuesday morning after responding to reports of an oil spill, officials said.

Firefighters arrived at the library about 9:35 a.m. to find a small puddle of diesel fuel in the lower parking area and a trail of diesel oil exiting the parking lot, officials said in a news release. Officials found the source of the spill to be a garbage truck, which had leaked the fuel.

The fuel's smell forced firefighters to evacuate the library's lower level, officials said. Other agencies arrived to help mitigate the spill, including Waste Management, the agency responsible for the spill. Dazzo's Auto Repair arrived to help dry the oil, and Batavia Waste Water examined the sewers and nearby river for fuel.

The lower level was then ventilated and turned over to library officials. Fire officials said the situation was under control by 10:15 a.m.

Waste management officials remained on the scene for continued cleanup and waste removal.
