BRIEF: Galaxy extends contracts of Robbie Rogers, Jose Villarreal and Rafael Garcia

Jan. 12--The Galaxy locked up three returning players for an additional season Tuesday, extending the contracts of defender Robbie Rogers, forward Jose Villarreal and midfielder Rafael Garcia through 2017.

Terms of the deals were not disclosed.

All three players are Southern California natives who played on the Galaxy's most recent Major League Soccer championship team in 2014.

Rogers, 28, acquired by the Galaxy in a 2013 trade with the Chicago Fire, struggled in his first season with the team. But midway through the next season he moved from the midfield to left back and emerged as one of the league's top defenders.

Villarreal, 22, signed with the team in 2012 as a homegrown player out of Inglewood. In 53 starts he has five goals and six assists in MLS play. He also scored the game-winning goal in last July's U.S. Open Cup win over the San Jose Earthquakes.

Garcia, 27, also came to the Galaxy in 2012, as a second-round pick in the 2012 MLS supplemental draft. He has made 21 MLS appearances, five of them starts.

The Galaxy will open preseason training camp later this month.
