BRIEF: Funeral set for college student killed by police officer on West Side

Jan. 06--Funeral services have been set for a college engineering student who was one of two people fatally shot by a police officer in the West Garfield Park neighborhood the day after Christmas.

Visitation for 19-year-old Quintonio LeGrier is scheduled from noon to 6 p.m. Friday at the House of Branch at 3125 W. Roosevelt Rd. The wake will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at New Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church at 4301 W. Washington Blvd., followed by the funeral at noon.

The funeral for the second victim, Bettie Jones, 55, was held Wednesday at New Mount Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church.

LeGrier and Jones, his downstairs neighbor, were killed as police answered a call about a domestic disturbance at their two-flat in the 4700 block of West Erie Street early on Dec. 26, according to police.

LeGrier's father had called 911 and said his son was carrying a baseball bat and threatening him, police said. An officer shot and killed LeGrier as he approached him with a metal bat in front of the house, police have said. Jones, a mother of five, was hit by mistake as she stood behind him near the front door, according to police.
