BRIEF: Fugitive wanted in Wheeling home invasion apprehended in Mexico

Feb. 12--Officials with the Cook County Sheriff's office said Thursday that a fugitive wanted in a 2014 Wheeling home invasion was apprehended in Mexico this week and returned to Cook County to face charges.

Steve Chung, 28, formerly from Des Plaines, was one of two people charged in a 2014 home invasion in Wheeling where the victim was allegedly held at gunpoint and beaten, Cook County Sheriff's office officials said Thursday in a news release.

An investigation by the Cook County Sheriff's Central Warrant Unit, the Wheeling Police Department and the FBI led to the apprehension of Chung on Wednesday in Guadalajara, Mexico, where he had been living since June 2015, teaching English online, officials said.

Mexican immigration officials escorted Chung on his flight Thursday morning to Chicago. Central Warrant Unit officers and FBI agents took Chung into custody after he landed at Midway Airport.

An arrest warrant was issued in June 2015 for Chung after he stopped coming to court.

Chung is scheduled to appear for a hearing on Friday at the George N. Leighton Criminal Court in Chicago, officials said.
