BRIEF: Freight train derails in Cicero, Metra trains not affected

Jan. 06--Nine cars of a freight train derailed in Cicero early Tuesday, seven of them toppling over and blocking traffic on 26th Street in the western suburb, authorities said.

No injuries were reported in the derailment, which occurred on Burlington Northern Santa Fe tracks in the 4700 block of West 26th Street around 2 a.m., according to railroad officials. The derailment was cleared by 9 a.m.

The accident did not affect Metra trains and no delays were reported on its BNSF line.

The cars that derailed were empty boxcars and lumber cars, according to BNSF spokesman Andy Williams. He said the cause was under investigation.
