Dec. 08--Commuters beware, freezing rain and sleet is expected to roll across most of the Chicago area Monday morning.
A band of wintry weather is forecasted to move westward across the city and suburbs beginning about 6 a.m., according to the National Weather Service.
A mix of freezing rain, sleet and possibly some snow will move across the western suburbs before reaching Chicago between 6 and 7 a.m.
The precipitation will be "fairly intense" for about an hour or so, said National Weather Service meterologist Mike Bardou.
That could mean problems for commuters Monday morning. Temperatures on the South Side of the city and the south suburbs will stay just above freezing, but temperatures on the city's North Side will be colder.
"It wouldn't take much for streets to have ice on them," said Bardou. "Definitely be careful and mindful."
The worst of the rain and sleet mix should move out of the area by about 9 a.m., although some light, on-and-off rain is likely to continue throughout the morning. Snow and sleet accumulation could reach an inch in some areas.
Temperatures will reach into the upper 30s Monday before dipping into the low 30s Monday evening.
