BRIEF: Freeze warning in effect throughout Chicago area

April 23--A return of freezing temperatures Thursday morning will force some Chicago area residents to don their warm coats once again.

A freeze warning is expected to be in effect across northern Illinois until 8 a.m., according to the National Weather Service.

Forecasters predict temperatures to be in the mid- to upper 20s west of Chicago and in the mid-30s in the city's downtown area.

The low temperatures may kill crops and other sensitive vegetation if they are left unprotected, according to the freeze warning.

The weather is expected to warm up by midday, reaching about 50 degrees, according to WGN-TV Chief Meteorologist Tom Skilling's forecast.

On Friday, a few thunderstorms are possible in the Chicago area, and temperatures are predicted to hold in the 40s throughout the day.
