BRIEF: Frank Gifford is fondly remembered in Bakersfield

Aug. 10--Frank Gifford, who died Sunday at age 84, was remembered by many in news reports.

Gifford played at Bakersfield High and Bakersfield College before going to USC and becoming an All-American.

The Bakersfield Californian story on Gifford included memories from former high school teammates and others who knew the college and pro football hall of famer.

Bakersfield College Coach Carl Bowser was the team's water boy when Gifford played at the community college.

"He was a typical Bakersfield guy, a Levi's, T-shirt-type of guy, until he got into the NFL. He was a really good guy," Bowser told the Californian.

"He had this little roadster car," Bowser said. "He'd park it on California Avenue. I'd hang around after practice and leave about the same time he would leave. I would be riding my bicycle and he would be going the same way. He'd tell me to get on my handlebars and he'd tow me."
