BRIEF: Fox Lake motorist hits gas meter and later collides with ambulance, police say

Feb. 03--A Fox Lake motorist hit an ambulance Tuesday while she was returning -- at the request of police -- to the scene of an earlier incident in which she had struck a gas meter attached to a home, police said.

According to a news release from the Fox Lake Police Department, Laverne Russo, 48, was driving a Pontiac Grand Prix when she hit a gas meter attached to a home in the 0-100 block of Lakeview Avenue in Fox Lake. Russo drove away and later told police she thought she had struck only bushes, according to the release.

Officers investigating the accident contacted her by phone and asked her to return to the scene. While on the way back, she struck a Fox Lake Fire Protection District ambulance at U.S. Highway 12 and Oak Avenue.

No injuries were reported in either incident, but Russo asked to be transported to a hospital for an unrelated medical matter, according to the release. A minor leak in the gas meter caused by the first collision was repaired by Nicor, according to police Lt. Mark Schindler.

Russo was cited for operating an uninsured motor vehicle, Schindler said. Police are continuing to investigate the incidents.
