Driver in Gilroy crash that killed four facing DUI charges, CHP says

May 13--The driver of a car that sped off a rural highway in Gilroy and crashed into a ravine, killing four passengers, will be arrested on suspicion of DUI when he's released from the hospital, a CHP official said.

Anthony Imbronone III, 23, was eastbound on Leavesley Road in a 1997 Ford Mustang about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, when for unknown reasons the car veered left off the road toward a drainage ditch, authorities said.

The car spun and rolled onto its passenger side and its roof slammed into a concrete abutment, CHP investigators said.

Imbronone suffered major head injuries and was taken to a hospital, where he was expected to survive. His four passengers were killed; three have been identified as Gilroy residents.

Their names will be released after their families are notified, said CHP Officer Herb Kellogg.

The frontseat passenger was a 24-year-old man and the three passengers in the backseat were females, two of whom were 18 years old. The age of the third female has not been determined.

Authorities learned of the crash from a neighbor who heard the impact, Kellogg said.

Investigators said there were skid marks at the scene and no other cars involved. Drugs and drug paraphernalia were found inside the Mustang, Kellogg said.
