Nov. 04--A smell like rotten eggs filled the air in some of the western and northwestern suburbs of Chicago early Wednesday after a malfunction at a Citgo refinery in Lemont.
Police officials in suburbs near the plant were told the odor was coming from the refinery. Citgo representatives told police that everything is under control and that the plant was experiencing an equipment issue, according to a police dispatcher for Romeoville.
Citgo plant officials could not immediately be reached for comment.
The smell spread to northwest suburban Downers Grove by about 3 a.m. but started to dissipate by around 6:30 a.m., according to a police dispatcher for Downers Grove.
