BRIEF: Former Notre Dame QB Tommy Rees joining NU staff

Dec. 23--Tommy Rees is returning to college football: The former Notre Dame quarterback is set to join Northwestern's staff as a graduate assistant, a source confirmed Tuesday.

The story was first reported by 247sports.com.

Rees, who threw for 7,670 yards and 61 touchdowns in his Notre Dame career, likely will work with Northwestern's quarterbacks. Rees started every game for Notre Dame in 2011 and '13 and played a significant role backing up Everett Golson as Notre Dame advanced to the BCS Championship Game in 2012.

Rees, who starred at Lake Forest High School, attempted to earn a spot in the NFL but was waived by the Redskins in May.

His father Bill Rees previously worked at Northwestern as coordinator of player personnel, as well as for the Chicago Bears.
