BRIEF: Former Kings defenseman Andrej Sekera signs with Edmonton Oilers

July 01--The relationship between the Kings and defenseman Andrej Sekera lasted 16 games.

Sekera not only is leaving the Kings but the unrestricted free agent landed in the same division, reaching a six-year deal worth $33 million with the fast-rebuilding Edmonton Oilers. The news was first reported by TSN.

Salary cap concerns and uncertainty prevented the Kings from making a serious run at retaining the 29-year-old.

The acquisition of Sekera at the trade deadline was a costly gamble for the Kings. Kings GM Dean Lombardi gave up a first-round pick -- which will be in 2016 -- and a prospect for Sekera.

Sekera had one goal and four points before injuring his knee at Chicago on March 30, which ended his season.
