BRIEF: Former Illinois Gov. James Thompson to retire from law practice

Feb. 24--Former Illinois Gov. James Thompson will retire next year from the Chicago law firm he joined after leaving political office.

Winston Strawn said Tuesday that Thompson, 78, senior chairman, will leave the firm Jan. 31 after 25 years at the helm. After his retirement, he will continue with Winston on a consulting basis for two years.

Thompson joined Winston in 1991 after 14 years as governor. He oversaw the law firm's international expansion to Europe and China. He also represented some of the firm's biggest clients, such as tobacco giant Philip Morris.

"Governor Thompson has played a key role in Winston's enduring growth and success," Dan Webb, the firm's chairman, said in a statement. "Without his leadership and countless contributions, the firm would not be what it is today."
