March 26--An article in the current issue of Fortune profiling what the magazine considers "the world's 50 greatest leaders" includes former Chicago Symphony Orchestra music director Daniel Barenboim. The Argentinian-born Israeli conductor and pianist was the only classical musician to make the cut. He ranked 46th on Fortune's list, between "Tonight Show" host Jimmy Fallon and NBA commissioner Adam Silver.
Barenboim, 72, who holds both Israeli and Palestinian citizenship, was cited for using his prominence to try to nurture peace in the Middle East through worldwide performances by the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, the ensemble of young Israeli and Arab musicians he co-founded with the late scholar Edward Said in 1999.
Not surprisingly, several CEOs of major corporations, including Apple's Tim Cook (No. 1 in Fortune's ranking), Starbucks' Howard Schultz (No. 17), Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg (No. 25) and Amazon's Jeff Bezos (No. 27), made the "greatest leaders" list. So did sports stars Yao Ming (No. 26) and Lebron James (No. 31). Pope Francis came in at No. 4, pop superstar Taylor Swift at No. 6, and U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts at No. 8.
