BRIEF: Former Blackhawks draft pick Sam Jardine signs with Rockford

Aug. 06--Sam Jardine gave up being a Buckeye to become an IceHog so he could take a shot at becoming a Blackhawk.

Jardine, a 21-year-old defenseman, agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the IceHogs, the Blackhawks' AHL affiliate in Rockford, the team announced on its website Wednesday.

A sixth-round pick by the Blackhawks in 2011, Jardine played three years for Ohio State, for whom the 6-foot-2, 209-pounder had three goals and 29 assists in 97 games.

Before that, he led the Camrose Kodiaks of the Alberta Junior Hockey League with 30 points (11 goals, 19 assists) during the 2011-12 season and was a captain with Team Canada West.

The Blackhawks have traded four defensemen -- Adam Clendening, Klas Dahlbeck, Stephen Johns and Mike Paliotta -- during the last year and chose not to re-sign Johnny Oduya this offseason.
