BRIEF: Five rescued trying to save girl at Hueneme Pier in Ventura County

Oct. 12--Five adults were rescued from the water at Hueneme Pier in Ventura County on Sunday afternoon while attempting to save an 11-year-old girl who was caught in a rip current, authorities said.

After the girl became caught in the current, her father attempted to save her but was soon overcome by the current as well, said Capt. Mike Lindberry, a Ventura County Fire Department spokesman.

Four other people then attempted to save the father and daughter, but they too became overwhelmed and all six were eventually pulled from the water by lifeguards and firefighters, Lindberry said.

The six were transported to a hospital. The girl is in moderate condition, Lindberry said.
