BRIEF: Fisher walnuts and pecan cookie pieces recalled over salmonella

Dec. 31--The Elgin-based maker of Fisher brand nuts said Wednesday it is voluntarily recalling Fisher 8-ounce chopped walnuts and Fisher 8-ounce pecan cookie pieces packaged in plastic bags because of possible salmonella contamination.

Consumers who recently bought the products online or in stores in Arizona, Arkansas, Kansas, Colorado, Louisiana, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma or Texas can return them for a refund or replacement, according to John B. Sanfilippo Son, which makes nuts, dried fruits and mixes under the Fisher and Harvest Valley Orchard brands.

The affected packages have "best by" dates of Oct. 31, 2015, and Nov. 3, 2015.

The voluntary recall is the result of a routine sampling program conducted by the FDA that found a package of Fisher chopped walnuts containing salmonella.

Consumers with questions can call the company at 800-874-8734, weekdays from 8:15 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. Central time.
