BRIEF: No injuries reported in Edgewater high-rise fire

Dec. 15--No injuries were reported after firefighters put out a blaze in an Edgewater apartment building early Monday.

The fire broke out about 3:15 a.m. in a 12-story building in the 5800 block of North Sheridan Road, said Chief Juan Hernanadez, a Fire Department spokesman.

Fireighters located the blaze in a third-floor unit and quickly put it out. No one was injured in the fire, but several units in the building needed to be ventilated for smoke.

Two people were treated on the scene and refused to be transported to area hospitals, Hernandez said. One person was displaced, and one cat died in the fire, he said.

As of 5 a.m., fire officials were still trying to determine the cause of the blaze, which was extinguished by about 4 a.m., officials said.

During the fire, residents of the 12-story building were evacuated, and dozens waited outside as firefighters finished their work Monday.
