BRIEF: Firefighters battle blazes in Griffith Park and Lancaster

Sept. 05--Firefighters extinguished a small brush fire in Griffith Park on Saturday afternoon after aggressively attacking the blaze before it could spread, officials said.

The 3- to 5-acre fire erupted about 2:30 p.m., according to Erik Scott, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department.

About 100 firefighters, assisted by water-dropping helicopters, battled the blaze and were able to douse it by 4 p.m., Scott said. Relatively cool temperatures -- about 82 degrees combined with 38% humidity -- helped firefighters contain the fire, he said.
