BRIEF: Firefighters battle 200-acre wildfire north of Ojai

Aug. 03--A wildfire charred about 200 acres Sunday afternoon in the Los Padres National Forest north of Ojai, officials said.

The fire was reported about 1:15 p.m., 25 miles north of Ojai near California 33 in Ventura County, said Los Padres National Forest spokesman Andrew Madsen.

The highway remained open and no structures were threatened, Madsen said. No evacuations have been ordered so far for popular campgrounds.

About 100 U.S.Forest Service and Ventura County firefighters are on scene, with three helicopter crews dropping retardant to slow the fire's spread. Flames were moving at a moderate rate and firefighters were aided by low winds and high humidity, Madsen said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but weather did not seem to be a factor.

"The area experienced monsoonal activity in the last week, but there have been no reports of any lightning in the last day or two," Madsen said.
