BRIEF: Fire officials seek cause of 750-acre blaze at Illinois Beach State Park

April 09--More than 750 acres burned Sunday at Illinois Beach State Park in Lake County.

The fire started about 2:45 p.m. and burned for about eight hours, according to authorities.

Close to two dozen agencies cooperated in fighting the blaze, including six from Wisconsin. One firefighter was taken to an area hospital.

The first arriving crew -- responding to a call of a possible 'open burn' -- found 30 acres on fire and flames more than 30 feet high, according to a news release from the Beach Park Fire Department.

The response was upgraded, drawing in crews from surrounding agencies.

The cause is under investigation but fire officials are asking for anyone who may have seen several young people fleeing the area to call the Lake County Sheriff's Department at (847) 377-4000.
