Dec. 13--Firefighters in Santa Monica battled a fire at an apartment complex near the pier Saturday night, officials said.
The blaze began about 7:45 p.m. on the 1600 block of Ocean Front Walk.
It took 33 firefighters about 30 minutes to extinguish the flames, said Santa Monica Fire officials.
Los Angeles firefighters also stepped in to help.
Two people were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Sixteen people were also evacuated.
Big Dean's Ocean Front Caf鬠housed on the first floor of the building, was closed.
Officials are investigating the cause of the fire, which gutted the second floor.
